Power Grid Corporation of India is a Navartana Status company of Government of India(CMP:Rs.87.00). Power Grid Corporations's areas of operations have divided into three segments. one is Development of Inter-State transmission Systems, second one is Grid Management, and the third one is Diversifiction ie.,Broadband Telecom Services.Sub-transmissionDistributionRural Electrification.

A perspective transmission plan has been evolved and put into implementation by POWERGRID for establishment of an integrated National Power Grid, in a phased manner, for strengthening the regional grids (five grids structured on geographical contiguity basis) and to support the generation capacity addition program of about 1,00,000 MW during X & XI Plans. Inter-regional power transfer capacity of 9500 MW by the end of FY 04-05 is expected to be enhanced to 30,000 MW by year 2012.

For creation of such a National Grid, total investment requirement in the central transmission sector during X & XI plan periods has been envisaged to be about Rs. 71,000 Crore (about USD 16 billion). Out of this, POWERGRID plans to invest about Rs. 50,000 Crore (70%), while the balance of Rs. 21,000 Crore (30%) is envisaged to be mobilized through Private Participation.
Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd., the Central Transmission Utility of the country, a leading Public Sector Undertaking owns, operates and maintains one of the largest power transmission (~50,000 ckt kms) network in the world. POWERGRID has diversified into telecommunication and has: National Long Distance Licence and Internet Service Provider–ISP (Category A) Licence.

Power Grid Coporation has posted Rs.1294.03 cr sales and net profit of Rs.306.29 cr for the Quarter ended June'08 of this financial year. Power Grid has improved it's operating pofits when it comapred to last financial year Q on Q on basis. Moreover the operating profit margins and net profit margins were improved in the first quarter of this financial year.

Government of India is having 86.4% stake in Power Grid Corporation. Power Grid is ruling monolopy in power distribution sector in India. As per the latest reports the company has formed 26:74 JV with Teesta Urja for associated transmission system for evacuation of power, from 1200 MW Teesta-III HEP being developed in Sikkim by Teesta Urja Ltd. The project comprises of construction of (i) 400 kV D/C Teesta - Mangan Transmission line (Approx. length 10 kms) and (ii) 400 kV D/C Mangan-Kishanganj Transmission Line (Approx. length 180 kms). The project would be built up on Build, Own & Operate (BOO) basis and will also provide transmission capacity to carry power upto Kishanganj S/S of POWERGRID from various private HEPs being developed in North Sikkim.

Power Grid Corporation share price price going up after the company has announced it's Q 1 results. And Mutual Funds are keenly increasing their exposure in this stcok.
